Beate Schirrmacher (Växjö):
“Without a sound, without a tone”: Silent Depictions of Music in Eyvind Johnson’s “Romantic Tale” and the Presence of Time Passing

What is music, if we do not hear it? How do we hear music, if we do not understand it? How can music be described without referring to sound? These questions arise reading Eyvind Johnson’s elaborate depictions of music that appear muted, as if the volume has been switched off. Instead of hearing sound, we see the performance. Instead of an ideal of musical transcendence, music becomes bodily present.
